GENERAL INFORMATION

This packet introduces students to composition writing. It was developed to be used for Composition Camp, but could be adapted for classroom or individual use.

ENVELOPES (9x12) are given to each student at the beginning of camp. The student places his/her name, Composition Camp, and the year on the front of the folder. If there is time, the student may decorate the front of the folder. The student’s papers for the week are kept in the folder.

STICKER PAGE - students are awarded a sticker for each four measures composed, winning a game, etc.  Using the outside of the envelope may substitute for printing the Sticker Page.

STORY AND/OR LISTENING TIME - each teacher will have to decide how to introduce the different parts of composition. Using stories about different composers and their music is one way of introducing students to composition. Suggestions:

• BEETHOVEN: Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, OP. 67. New York Philharmonic, Leonard Bernstein, Conductor. Columbia Records, 1963. This recording includes a talk with musical illustrations on "How a Great Symphony Was Written" from the famous Leonard Bernstein television program on the first movement of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony.
• GRIEG: Recordings of Peer Gynt Suite to illustrate a mood (Ase’s Death, Morning). Video: The Adventures of Peer Gynt produced by Jonathon Bogner, a Jim Gamble Puppet Productions.
• Marsalis: Wynton Marsalis has four videos and a book that includes an Audio CD that teaches the fundamentals of music and composition. These materials can be found in various music catalogs such as Music in Motion.
