Our philosophy is that students who will be life-long musicians

need to understand how music works.

The study of music theory teaches the basic fundamentals of music. But if a student will also compose music, they constantly reinforce those fundamentals.

As students experiment with sounds on their instruments, they develop an awareness of how to produce the sounds they want through technique. Composition shows them how the appropriate markings make those sounds reproducible by another person.

And by writing their own compositions, students begin to see music through the composer’s eyes. Repertory style and form take on new meaning. Learning new literature is easier once basic forms are understood.

Johannes Brahms said "There is no composing without hard work".

However, if the work isn’t too hard nor the requirement too long, all students will accept the challenge of learning the process of composition.
